On March 16, 2017, the City of Raleigh Fire Department responded to one of its largest fires in its history. The five-story Metropolitan Apartment building under construction in Downton Raleigh was engulfed in flames. After three hours, 130 firefighters from more than 30 fire stations contained the blaze. In addition to the Metropolitan building, adjacent condominiums, apartments, and businesses were damaged.
John Fanning (Assistant Chief - Fire Marshal) and Preston Gaster (Investigator and Captain) were leaders in controlling the incident. Their presentation will describe the Raleigh Fire Department’s response to the event, logistics and operations to contain the fire, investigative methods that followed, lessons learned, and possible implications on future building in Downtown Raleigh.
This event will provide 1 PDH.
