Far Niente Wine Estates was founded in Oakville in 1880 by real estate investor John Benson, with their first official vintage being bottled in 1886. Over the ensuing century, the winery weathered phylloxera, fires, prohibition, and family tragedies to become one of California's most iconic producers under winemaker Gil Nickel, who restored the property in 1979.
The winery's name comes from the Italian dolce far niente, which means "the sweetness of doing nothing"; and while this certainly reflects the spirit and joy with which one can enjoy their wines, it doesn't speak to the skill, dedication, and care shown to the winemaking process. After all, you don't become a legend by doing nothing.
House of Far Niente includes labels such as Nickel & Nickel, EnRoute, Bella Union, and Post & Beam.
We'll be joined in this tasting by Kimberly Unterreiner, Southeast Diustrict Manager for the House of Far Niente, a Certified Specialist of Wine and certified Introductory Sommelier. And as a former collegiate basketball player, this is certain to be a slam dunk (sorry!) tasting.
