Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 54 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
The Durant Nature Preserve Border Loop Trail is primarily level and offers views of hardwood trees and rock outcrops. However, patches of mud may be present on the trail, especially by the creek, which separates the Simms Branch Trail from the forested Border Trail.
The Border Trail runs parallel to the creek as you hike along it. There are two creek crossings that include walking across rocks, but are easy to navigate. Whale Rocks is a noteworthy location where you may view enormous rock formations that have a whale-like appearance. Natural sand pits and dry creek beds can be found along the trail. Additionally, the trail winds through pine tree-heavy sections. There are plenty of wildlife chances, including red-tailed hawks, turtles, lizards, and minnows.

Remember, this does not necessarily have to be a Unit event…please spread the word to our Scouting families and promote the hikes as “family events”!
All you need to bring is a good pair of walking shoes, plenty of water and your enthusiasm.
Nature will provide the rest! We hope to see you on the trail. Rain or shine!
Please remember to follow the Guide to Safe Scouting!
