We are delighted to invite you to an upcoming illustrated lecture by Dr Ian Lochhead, exploring the career of distinguished Christchurch architect Peter Beaven.

Peter Beaven (1925–2012) was one of New Zealand’s most admired twentieth-century architects. His work challenged accepted Modernist ideas and developed a deeply personal response to history, place and location. His projects ranged from large office buildings, sports stadiums and hotels through to private homes, where his ability to create unique solutions for his clients is especially evident.

This lecture will also provide a wider context for understanding the important group of houses Beaven designed in Central Otago between 1969 and 2003 including the local home ‘Whakatipua’.

Dr Ian Lochhead taught Art History at the University of Canterbury from 1981 to 2014 and has written extensively on the history of New Zealand architecture and heritage conservation. He first met Peter Beaven in the 1970s and, in 1995, curated an exhibition to mark the architect’s 70th birthday. In 2019, he gave the inaugural Peter Beaven Memorial Lecture at Christchurch Art Gallery.
