NYC 520 - Ravenswood Generating Station Tour

Ravenswood Generating Station is NYC’s largest power plant. On the hottest days of the year, Ravenswood provides over 20% of the City’s electricity. For more than 60 years, Ravenswood has been a core piece of New York City’s electric infrastructure.  

Now, Ravenswood is on the cusp of transformation. Rise Light & Power, which manages and operates the plant, is working on a plan to transform the site into a green energy hub. By replacing the site’s 1960s-era fossil fuel generators with renewable energy, the Renewable Ravenswood plan envisions a major environmental justice victory for Western Queens, a just transition for its union workforce, and a reliable green energy future for all New Yorkers.

Rules & Guidelines 

Tour availability and size are subject to change based on plant operations. Attendees will be required to sign a liability waiver and submit photo identification in advance of the tour. On the day of the tour, attendees must have a physical government-issued photo ID for site access (copies/photos of IDs, school IDs, and employer-issued identification will not be accepted).  

The site tour includes traversing uneven surfaces, multiple flights of stairs, and up to one mile of walking. Dress appropriately. You will be visiting an operating industrial facility and should wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirt and/or jacket. You may come in contact with materials that can soil and stain clothing. We will be outdoors for much of your visit. Bring weather-appropriate gear. Do not wear high heels, open-toed shoes, loose clothing or loose jewelry.   

Where necessary we will provide personal protective equipment, including hard hats, eye protection and hearing protection. Photos are prohibited inside the facility. No person under the age of 18 years old is allowed on site under any circumstances.
