In today's global world, vicarious trauma is not limited to those who work in service related professions. All of us have access to a 24/7 news cycle that brings to our fingertips images, videos, and new stories that are difficult to process.In this Alaap, we invite you to explore with us:How vicarious trauma from global conflicts can show up in unnoticed ways in our emotions, decision making, and everyday lives.The ways in which global conflicts can trigger reflections on our own recent histories as Bengali AmericansStrategies for navigating vicarious trauma and resulting feelings of stress and uncertaintyWhile this session is facilitated by individuals with mental health training, Alaap is not group therapy and is not a replacement for therapy or other mental health treatment. Alaap is a space for conversation, reflection, and community, where lived experience is valued, and everyone brings wisdom.Refreshments will be served!---About AlaapAlaap is a support group aimed at providing a safe space for Bengali individuals to discuss and explore mental health topics, fostering open conversations and connections through shared experiences."Alaap" is a Bengali word that can translate to discussion or conversation in English, based on how it is used. We chose Alaap to define this support group because there is lack of conversation about mental health in the Bengali community. While ALAAP meetings are not therapy groups, they can be therapeutic in nature because attendees share their personal experiences in a non-judgmental environment. ALAAP meetings cover various mental health topics, such as trauma, addiction, and depression.Who Can Attend ALAAP?ALAAP meetings are open to anyone above the age of 18 who identifies as Bengali and is local to the New York City area.
