Theatres in Quebec City have blossomed vastly in the recent years, where most popular shows and concerts take place in venues down the street from Le Manoir d’Auteuil. Theatre has become an elemental part of Quebec’s culture, and it is enjoyed by both locals and visitors. Today’s performances are very varied, and they range from opera, modern dramas, musicals, comedies, dance and much more. Located right in the heart of the city, the historic Dream Theatre Le Capitole de Quebec has hosted almost a century’s worth of the greatest arts and entertainment and was mostly used for cultural events, but now it has evolved into much more than just a concert hall. It hosts world-renowned performers since its reopening in 1992. Apart from its magnificent live Quebec City theatre performances, you can also get an eyeful of the unique and intricate designs. The Grand Theatre de Quebec is one of Quebec City’s main theatres -Louis-Frechette and Octave Cremazie, which has two stages for symphonic concerts, opera, music, dance, plays and various Canadian and International touring companies. The main entrance is graced by a beautiful mural by artist Jordi Bonet, depicting life, death, and liberty to bring your attention to the city’s struggle for freedom and cultural divergence. Be sure to also catch a live musical show from Canada’s oldest symphony orchestra, directed by the French maestro Fabien Gabel while you’re there at the Grand Theatre de Quebec.
Cooperative Meduse is a multidisciplinary performing arts centre in Quebec, a hub for local artists to showcase their talents, also hosts various plays in Quebec City and other musicals in Quebec City. It is built in a row of historic houses, now mixed with newly designed buildings. Cinema Cartier is a movie theatre which screens a lot of popular movies, a lot of interesting foreign ones included and offbeat films and is located in Old Quebec. Palais Montcalm- Maison de la musique is a beautiful theatre located in the Old Quebec, which offers programs featuring classical music, jazz and others. The Raoul-Jobin concert hall provides excellent acoustics. Carrefour International de Theatre de Quebec is an international theatrical festival which takes place in late May and early June in multiple venues like the Salle Albert-Rousseau, the Grand Theatre de Quebec, the Theatre Periscope and Complexe Meduse. The productions are usually in English or French with English subtitles. Maison O’Neill hosts a variety of musical events, comedy acts, and others, apart from hosting temporary exhibitions and presenting artists’ works. At the Salle Albert-Rousseau, you can find a diverse range of performances from classical music to comedy and also check out the contemporary Francophone music at none other than the mesmerizing Theatre Petit-Champlain.
