The Course Location:

The course is held at the Sutton Road Driver Training Complex. This complex is located 1km from the junction of Sutton rd. and Piallago Av on Sutton rd.

The Course Schedule:

The course starts at 9.00am and finishes at approximately 4.30pm. Short breaks for morning and afternoon tea and a lunch break of about 45 minutes are provided.

The Theory Component:

This component starts with an introduction to the principles of defensive driving, during which the students are encouraged to debate the problems that they face on the road. We next examine the most common accident situations, what causes them and how they can be avoided. We like to involve the students by considering some of their recent experiences, to see if there are useful lessons to be learned. The students are then introduced to a system of vehicle control which provides the basis for good safe driving.

The Practical Component:

This component is taught in your own car and consists of three parts.

Part 1 is taught on the skid pan. Here the students learn, in a safe and controlled environment, how to control the vehicle when it gets into a slide. The difference between controlling an older car and a car fitted with ESP.
(Do you know what to do in a car that has ESP?)

Part 2 consists of three items taught on the circuit:
Stopping distances: first from speeds of 40km/h, and then from those of 80 km/h. The difference between a car with ABS and a non-ABS car.

Emergency braking: a very important skill to master.
How to how to steer correctly and how to activate ABS if fitted to your car.
(Students are often surprised to discover their lack of skill when confronted with emergency braking situations!)
Cornering: in which we first teach the use of those cornering procedures that minimize wear and tear on the vehicle. We then demonstrate correct braking and gear selection before cornering, which also saves on tire wear and improve fuel economy.

In Part 3, the students rehearse the skills that they have acquired during the day.

All students are given a certificate at the completion of the course.

Outcome:
By the end of the course you should be able to:

Identify and experience how a vehicle behaves on different road surfaces.
How to brake safely and quickly to avoid hazards.
Learn “best practice” steering, cornering and braking methods.
Have a better understanding of road rules.
Understand how you and your car react to adverse conditions.
Understand and Know your personal Driver skill Limits.
Drive within your limits and be a more observant driver.

Cancellation policy:
Cancellation made two days prior to the date of the course will be credited for use on another Defensive course at a later date.

Cancellation made within two days of the course will forfeit the full cost of the course.
An exception for medical conditions will be given if a doctor's certificate is presented.
