OVERVIEW
Katakolon is a small seaside port that serves as the gateway to ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. From here it’s an easy trip inland to walk the original stadium, explore the sanctuary of Zeus and Hera, and visit excellent museums. This event page is an information hub for anyone on our sailing: share tips, ask questions, and post helpful updates for this port.
TIMING
Arrival and all-aboard vary by sailing—check your daily program for exact times. Because Olympia is inland, plan generously for travel time both ways and aim to be back at the port 60–90 minutes before all-aboard.
GETTING TO OLYMPIA
Distance is roughly 35–45 minutes each way depending on transport and traffic. Options typically include ship tours, taxis, private drivers, rental cars, and—when operating—the local train via Pyrgos. Train schedules can be limited or seasonal; verify day-of at the station or online. Taxis and private drivers often wait at the port; confirm total fare and return time before leaving. Roads are straightforward, but parking near the site can be busy on peak days.
WHAT TO SEE
Archaeological Site of Olympia: walk through the gymnasium, temples, and the ancient stadium where you can stand on the starting line. Temple of Zeus (once home to a wonder of the ancient world) and Temple of Hera are highlights. Archaeological Museum of Olympia: world-class sculptures and artifacts from the sanctuary. Museum of the History of the Olympic Games: context for how the ancient competitions were run. In Katakolon itself: a compact waterfront with cafés, shops, and sea views—nice for a short stroll or a relaxed lunch if you’re not heading inland.
PRACTICAL TIPS
The site is mostly outdoors with limited shade—wear a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for uneven ground; carry water. Expect security at museum entrances and ticket lines at peak hours; combined tickets for site and museum are commonly offered. Modest dress is appreciated at churches/monasteries if you make additional stops. Keep valuables secure, especially on transport. Always follow ship time, not local time, and leave a buffer for the return.
FOOD AND LOCAL FLAVORS
Look for Greek salads with local olive oil, grilled fish, souvlaki, tzatziki, and loukoumades (honey-dipped dough bites). A seaside lunch back in Katakolon can be a relaxing way to end the day.
