- **Event Name**: Opening Doors Project: Race & Song: A Musical Conversation with Pamela Means & Alastair Moock
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 14 Mar, 2026 at 07:30 pm
- **Event Description**: RACE AND SONG is an exploration of history and current events through the lens of race, using the powerful tool of music. Veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours Pamela Means and Alastair Moock draw on their long-standing friendship to engage audiences in thoughtful, generous conversations about race, class, gender, and history.

In musical dialogue, Pamela and Alastair share lived experiences through song (which always helps the medicine go down!) alongside historical and personal photos. The program features songs such as “Wade in the Water,” “Freight Train,” “It’s a Mighty Long Way,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and Moock’s own “Be a Pain.” These songs—and the stories behind them—amplify and provide historical context for Pamela Means’ and Alastair Moock’s life stories and perspectives.

Over the past few years, Pamela Means and Alastair Moock have brought meaningful, accessible conversations about race to a wide range of audiences and spaces. One of their greatest strengths as a duo is their ability to meet audiences where they are. Race and Song has toured nationally to theaters, performing arts centers, houses of worship, libraries, senior centers, and schools of all kinds—from elementary and high schools to colleges and universities.

Pamela Means has been compared to Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, a cross between Suzanne Vega and Jimi Hendrix, and an heir to the legacy of Nina Simone. She's “one of the fiercest guitar players and politically-rooted musicians in the industry today" (Curve Magazine), who has worn a hole in two of her guitars with her "insanely brilliant" (Press Herald, Portland ME) playing and “stark, defiant songs.” (New York Times).

Alastair Moock is an award-winning singer-songwriter, GRAMMY-nominated family musician, social justice and songwriting educator, and co-founder of The Opening Doors Project. The Boston Globe calls Alastair “one of the town’s best and most adventurous songwriters.” The Washington Post says “every song is a gem.”

This performance is part of the “Voices Rising” series by the Opening Doors Project.

Funded in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the six New England state arts agencies.
