Stone Lab is The Ohio State University’s six-acre island campus in Put-in-Bay harbor and the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States. Stone Laboratory is the research, education, and outreach facility of Ohio Sea Grant, which is part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant, and part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Tour of the historic South Bass Island Lighthouse (transportation not provided)

Getting There:

To get to South Bass Island, you can take either the Miller Boat Line or Jet Express Ferry. You are responsible for all ground transportation to and from Ohio State University’s research docks.

Free transportation to Gibraltar Island will be provided from Ohio State’s research docks on South Bass Island. The last trip to Gibraltar Island is at 3:30 p.m., the last boat off Gibraltar Island is at 4:00 p.m. Or, if it is more convenient, you can pay for water taxi services from Put-In-Bay to Gibraltar Island at the Boardwalk Restaurant.

Requests made two weeks in advance will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.
