Opgegroeid in een kerk in New York begon Michelle David al op vierjarige leeftijd met zingen en sloot zich op haar vijfde aan bij haar eerste groep, The Mission of Love. Voordat ze naar Europa verhuisde, tourde ze wereldwijd met Broadway-producties als Mama, speelde ze in theaterproducties als The Sound of Motown, Glory of Gospel en Mahalia, en nam ze op voor artiesten als Diana Ross en Michael Bolton.

Michelle David & The True-Tones ontstonden uit het veelgeprezen project The Gospel Sessions van Paul Willemsen en Onno Smit. Wat begon als rauwe herinterpretaties van gospel groeide uit tot een band met een geheel eigen sound, aangevuld door drummer Bas Bouma. Hun muziek wortelt in gospel, maar vertakt zich moeiteloos naar soul, funk, Afrobeat en rhythm & blues.

Met albums als The Gospel Sessions Vol. 1–4, Truth & Soul en Brothers & Sisters oogstte de groep internationale lof. BBC Radio 6 riep een album uit tot “Album of the Year”, FIP Radio bekroonde een plaat tot “Album van de Maand” en ook de internationale pers sprak lovend over hun muziek.

Live zijn Michelle David & The True-Tones een explosie van energie, groove en positiviteit. Hun optredens brachten festivals als Pinkpop, North Sea Jazz, Umbria Jazz, Cheltenham en het London Jazz Festival tot leven en maakten diepe indruk in zalen door heel Europa.

Met Soul Woman, verschenen op 27 februari 2026, laat de band haar meest persoonlijke kant horen. Het album ademt thema’s als identiteit, groei, kracht en verbinding — gedragen door een tijdloze sound met invloeden van Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Four Seasons en D’Angelo.
