Prakriti- Dance in Nature

Prakriti- Dance in Nature

For several years after I came back from my dance school, I struggled to find a place where I could continue my practice. My city being still new to the art of contemporary dance, did not have spaces with good floors or appropriate size; or you can say a space equipped for contemporary dance practice. Instead of stopping myself from practicing, I decided to start exploring public spaces like parks, hills, even parking lots to do my regular practice. Every time I felt the need of a studio space; I kept reminding my self, "Why do I even need a particular type of place to practice when I already have so much of space available outside the four walls to move around and explore?"
This is also when I started studying about site specific performance making which led me to teachers and choreographers who make site specific work.
My brain child, 'Prakriti-dance in nature' took it's roots during this time. Dancing in nature has been a real time learning experience each time I have practiced in nature. It has not only helped me as a performance maker but it has also helped me grow as a person. Improved sense of self, getting rid of inhibitions, improved confidence, improved physical strength; these are a few of the many benefits I have received from this kind of practice. A few months ago, I had this thought that if this kind of practice is helping me at so many levels then won't it also help others around me. I started taking my students outside in the wild/nature for a class or two every month which eventually helped us give this whole idea a form of a club which would be open to anyone who wants to come and explore movement with/in/within nature.
