Filmmaking Foundation Workshop

This is an intensive, comprehensive hands-on workshop in which aesthetics of filmmaking are explained in theory as well in practice. Participants will learn the narrative film form and the collaborative nature of its creation by
# Participating in its productive process.
# Screening of classic masterpieces will give a sense of the power of this medium.
# A team of experienced mentors and other film industry professionals from various areas of expertise will instruct and guide the participants through all major stages of professional film making, from History of Cinema, Screenwriting, Directing actors and crew, Production, Cinematography to Digital Editing on FCP.
# During the course of the workshop 3 short films will be developed and produced by the participants.

Workshop Content:
Understanding Cinema – History, Development & its Narrative till date - Nature & Power of Cinema

Screenwriting – Concept/Idea/Message – Premise – Plot – Treatment – Development – Scenes – Transitions - Format

Direction - Language/ Grammar of Cinema, Shot division, Working with Actors and crew

Sound - Sound design - Aesthetics of Sounds - Physics of Sounds - Recording, Producing & Mixing - Boom and other devices

Cinematography – Construction & Functions of Camera - Capturing/Sensors - Camera Movements – lensing - Light & Lighting - Composition

Production –Scheduling & Budgeting

Editing - Continuity - Hardware / Software - Process – Dumping, Viewing, - Sorting, Assembly, Rough cut, Laying of soundtracks, Fine cut & Form Mixing - Final outputs (I Mac and Final Cut Pro)

Students will make two 1-minute and one 5-7 minute short films.

Workshop Instructor
Prof. Prashant Desai (Anchor Faculty) graduated from the Film & television Institute of India (FTII) in Cinema with specialization in Cinematography in 1982. Since then he has worked in the industry in various capacities in Cinematography, screenplay writing, Production and Direction. He has taught at FTII, Pune and NID, Ahmedabad. He was the HOD (Film & Video) at MIT Institute of Design, Pune and Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai. He teaches at SNDT, Mumbai, regularly since 1996. He has also taught at FLAME and MRID (Maharaja Ranjit Singh Gaekwad Institute of Design, Baroda) His Filmmaking workshops are highly appreciated by the participants.
