Have you always thought of yourself as the next Michelangelo or Rodin, but haven't had the opportunity to practice your craft? In this workshop, Alijan Shaikh guides you through the various techniques of chalk carving. An exercise in hand-eye coordination and immense attention to detail, the art of carving on a smaller scale is both painstaking yet, truly breathtaking. The medium of chalk transcends its humble purposes and becomes an expression of the artist that may be carried around in one’s pocket.
We will also explore the concepts of permanence and ephemerality in the context of art and how scale plays a role in the perception of form, whether figurative or more literal.

Alijan Gulzar Shaikh is a Pune based visual artist, who is currently pursuing his B.Com from Abeda Inamdar Senior College of Arts, Science and Commerce. He started his work with chalks at the age of 15, carving portions of the Taj Mahal and then went on to carve animals, cartoons, portraits, objects and thereon. His work majorly spans around chalk portraits he has made of his teachers, friends and family. He has facilitated chalk carving workshops for students from Teach For India, and Avsara Academy in Pune. Alijan’s work has also been featured at Teach for India and in Vice, India. He will be presenting his artwork for the first time at TIFA Working Studios.
