About the event

Wheel Works Clay Class with Visiting Artist Jen Davis
Tuesdays, July 22 - August 19

$150 for 5 session class*

In this class students will learn beginning and advanced pottery techniques on the pottery wheel, as well as handbuilding techniques for decoration and embellishment. This class is welcoming of participants of all learning levels and can be adjusted to each student's skill level. This class will run for 5 weeks on Tuesday evenings from 4:00pm-6:00pm. In addition to class time, students are allotted 1 Free Clay Studio Day Pass each week to finish pieces or to practice in between class sessions. This class will be utilizing cone 6 clay and work will be fired in an electric kiln.

This class is priced at $150 and includes instruction time, glazes, use of tools, firings, and 5 Clay Open Studio Day Passes (1 per week). The class fee does not include clay. Students are welcome to use our reclaim clay, if there is some available, at no additional cost, or can purchase clay from the Arts Center. We sell clay for $20 plus tax per 25 lb. bag. There will be an add-on after adding this class if you choose to purchase clay. For students who wish to work in a specific type of clay/bring their own clay, note that the clay MUST be able to be fired safely to cone 04 for our bisque fire and cone 6 for our glaze fire.

Class Curriculum:

Please note that the size of pieces produced in this class may vary, depending on students' experience levels. For example, beginners may create a smaller piece (approx. 1/2lb-1lb), intermediate level students may create a mid-sized piece (approx. 2lb-3lb), and advanced students may produce a larger piece (approx. 5lbs+).

Week 1: Centering, vessel (bowl) Start Coiling piece

Week 2: Trimming vessel, Create a Plate (Tunnel Centering)

Week 3: Trimming Plate, throwing a cylinder (pulling taller) Handles

Week 4: Attaching Handles, Glazing & Sgraffito Techniques, (Thrown and Altered)

Week 5: Spoons, More Glazing Techniques, Closing Forms

About Your Instructor:
Jen Davis, or as many might recognize her, Jen Sanchez, was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado before moving to pursue a ceramics career in Washington State. Jen is returning to her hometown this summer to share what she has learned over her 20-year ceramics career on the west coast.
