Since 2014, young people in YDA have been professionally trained annually in all aspects of filmmaking while learning to direct and produce projects addressing stories that matter to them. YDA filmmakers see themselves as access points to stories not often seen in the mainstream and — through a deep dive into story workshopping — transpose those stories into high impact, high caliber films. In 2019, YDA curated films made by our students to broadcast on public television, first in Colorado on Rocky Mountain PBS, then nationwide via American Public Television. YDA films now air on over 82 percent of PBS stations across the U.S. Completed films in YDA are particularly effective in opening the door to courageous conversations about a range of topics, including teen mental health, identity and belonging, immigration, family life and much more. Because of this, YDA created the Youth Media Matters festival which allows teen audiences to watch YDA films, meet the filmmakers and engage in peer-to-peer talk-back sessions and moderated conversations. What Is MY NAME IS? A free art-based identity, empowerment and skill-building year-long after-school mentoring program designed for 100 at-risk kids 9-15 years old. Kids will meet 2 hours/week with an artist, group assistant and 9 other kids, learning artistic, creative, and filming skills. Outside experts will join to teach and discuss a wide-range of life skills and topics. Together, they will create a documentary showcasing the process and their experiences.
