About the event

Auditions Much Ado About Nothing
Hear ye, hear ye! An important announcement regarding auditions for Much Ado About Nothing! 🥳

Auditions for Much Ado About Nothing will utilize sides, rather than our typical cold reading. You don't need to be memorized, but you should be familiar with the scenes and the language. In the audition side packet, each scene is labeled with the relevant characters at the top.

Of course, you always have the option to cold read... but why would you want to? 🙃

Access the sides at the link below, or on the Audition page of our website.

Much Ado About Nothing Character Descriptions

Leonato: 60’s Male Governor of Messina Hero’s dad. Most action takes place at his villa. Very protective of his daughter, Hero. Also very conscious of his name and position, which creates conflict when he “learns” that Hero has been naughty.

Hero: 20’s Leonato’s daughter. Sweet, obedient, innocent. Interested in Claudio.

Beatrice: 20’s Leonato’s niece. Not clear in script who her dad or mom is. Leonato has several siblings who could be her parents. Very independent. Can be sassy. Doesn’t want to admit to the weakness of “submission” to some man. Interested in Benedick but doesn’t want to admit it for fear of being mocked or teased.

Antonio: 50’s Leonato’s brother. Could be played by a man or mature woman. Man would be best. Doesn’t seem to be Beatrice’s dad. Voice of reason, especially when Leonato gets mad about his daughter Hero apparently having been naughty.

Ursula: 40’s Waiting gentlewoman to Hero. Wise. Calm. Nice reasonable lady who can still enjoy a good time.

Margaret: 30’s or 40’s. Waiting gentlewoman to Hero. Kinda sexy. Likes men. Kinda physical. Likes to play.

Don Pedro: 30’s to 50’s. Prince of Aragon. When we meet him he is not being a Prince, but is with fellow soldiers returning from a war, and preparing to be put up at Leonato’s for a month or so. Peacemaker. Voice of reason. Friendly. Personable. Not at all regal. Nice guy.

Count Claudio: 20’s. young lord from Florence. Comes back from war with other soldiers, to stay at Leonato’s for a while. Sweet. Somewhat innocent, but not stupid. Had noticed Hero before going off to war, and now his interest in her is renewed upon returning. Loyal. Respectful.

Signior Benedick: 30’s Gentleman from Padua. Another soldier who seems to know these people in Messina. Has had an off and on relationship with Beatrice over time. They seem to have a “thing” going. They spar a lot. Adamant about never succumbing to “love” or marrying.

Don John: 30’s to 50’s Don Pedro’s bastard brother. Bitter. Thinks people who pretend to respect him and want to include him are being condescending. Troublemaker. Wants to disrupt the order of things by creating situations of conflict.

Borachio: 30’s to 50’s Follower of Don John. Adventuresome. Kind of naughty. Likes to make trouble, but not be the instigator. Will do something for money, even it it’s not right.

Conrade: 30’s to 50’s. Follower of Don John. Can be played by a man or mature woman. Not too smart. A follower.

Dogberry: 40’s to 50’s Master Constable in Messina Pompous, blustery, no idea what he’s doing but needs to look “in charge”. May have inherited the post/title and doesn’t know what to do. Overspoken. Uses big words, but the wrong ones. Tries hard to maintain appearance, even though clueless.

Verges: 50’s to 60’s Dogberry’s partner. Knows the drill. Been there, done that. But can’t be in charge because of his lower rank. When Dogberry gets lost, gives advice. Reasonable. Experienced.

George Seacole: 40’s to 60’s Leader of the Watch. Quiet. Reserved. His main strength is that he can read and write.

First watchman………………Both are very small characters. May not be needed

Second watchman……………

Sexton: 60’s to 70’s Kind of like a judge. Informed. Understands and can enforce process of things like interrogation

Friar Francis: 50’s to 70’s Can be played by a man or woman. Religious person. Quiet. Reasonable. Comes up with a way to create a “new” Hero after the current one is rejected by her dad for being a naughty girl. The new Hero will than be able to marry Claudio and live happily ever after. The Friar helps make all this happen.

Messenger: 20’s to 40’s. Could be played by a woman. Responsible. Respectful. Formal. Well spoken. Good soldier type, although not a soldier.
