Poetry as Multimedia

This generative workshop introduces multimedia as part of a creative poetic practice, exploring the ways in which signs and symbols are translated into visual images, nonverbal play precedes language, and form reflects content. The work of artists including Diana Khoi Nguyen, Sasha Stiles and Jenny Holzer, among others, will inspire participants to experiment with poetry in various forms, including still and moving film, music, textile, light projection, and more. Together, we will foster a deeper understanding of the emotional and social impact of poetry through new poetic structures.

Open to writers of all levels and genres. This is a 3-hour workshop. Please prepare for approximately 1 hour of work ahead of the session. Please bring a print copy of one personal photograph to the session.

About Your Teaching Artist

GENESIS ISLA MARISOL (she/they) is a multilingual (Nahuatl/Spanish/English) poet. Their first collection Regeneraciones: Regenerations received the Graduate Student Creative Writing Award from the Department of English at the University of Rhode Island. In addition to fostering a lifelong creative writing practice, Genesis is an interdisciplinary teaching artist and librarian specializing in rare books.

Community Access Lottery

LitArts RI offers a lottery for free admission to those who are from a community that has faced institutional barriers in the writing and publishing worlds or who lack access to resources and could not otherwise afford to attend. The lottery closes 2 weeks before each workshop, at which time entrants will be notified if they are a recipient of one of the free seats.
