- **Event Description**: This 2-3 hour interactive workshop is an introduction on how to apply anticapitalist ideals to artists’ personal finances and lifestyle.About this EventThis introductory workshop is designed to empower and inspire students to break free from the capitalist systems that predetermine our financial goals and values. Capitalism works by creating the illusion that we need to make more money and take on debt in order to build up our assets and net worth. This class introduces students to tiered approaches to personal spending and life management. It talks about how to financially thrive in areas of personal goals and values that are defined by each student not society. These anti-capitalist methods when applied create opportunity for artists' financial households to potentially save more while spending and working outside of their creative practice less, leaving artists more time to invest in their creative pursuits. This lecture is an overview of a larger 6 month 6 session workshop and will touch on and introduce the following in about 20 minute segments:1 - What it means to be anticapitalist while existing in a capitalist society & how to make a tiered budget plan.2 - Budgeting and financial tracking methods & managing emotional blocks to your budget with a heavy emphasis on radical acceptance.3 - Household and studio lifestyle systems to set you up for budget success & all aspects of healthcare.4 - Organizing your time in and out of the studio, balancing grant and other applications, project idea organization & how to price and bill for your work.5 - Taxes, net Worth & saving for retirement.6 - Additional Q&A with an emphasis on releasing ourselves financially and emotionally from the shackles of capitalism.A note to all students about care: We will be talking about money in this workshop. Talking about money can be triggering, traumatic or uncomfortable for many people. Please do what you need to do to take care of yourself even if that means exiting the workshop. No one will be asked to share personal financial details or information during this workshop. My aim is to present open and honest information in a judgment free environment but this is not a controlled environment. "description": "Brooke Erin Goldstein is a textile artist, curator, and teaching artist living and working in the Providence RI area. She began taking art and sewing classes at the age of 3 because she refused to leave when her older sister was being dropped off. She learned machine sewing at 6 from the most lovable chain smoking Italian seamstress Carmella, who let Goldstein experiment on an industrial sewing machine while Italian soap operas played in the background. Goldstein fell in love with quilting at sleep away camp at 10. Since then she’s spent her time graduating RISD in Textiles, designing for Reebok including projects for the NFL, MLB, NHL, WMBA, and the Super Bowl, then leaving all that behind to focus on creating art experiences that aim to make people feel less alone. Goldstein’s Quilted Room installations, quilted paintings, artist books, surface design based drawings, public art stuff, sculptures, curatorial projects, and miscellaneous etc. have shown regionally and nationally since 2003. Her current passion, outside of making art, is teaching anti-capitalist personal finance to artists, activists, and others helping make their lives sustainable in a system that sets us up to fail."
