This event brings together lived experience, advocacy, and professional expertise to deepen our understanding of gun violence and explore how we can work together to prevent violence and support healing. The program will also examine how communities can respond to violence in ways that promote safety, resilience, and healing while addressing the fear, stigma, and misinformation that can emerge in the aftermath of these tragedies.The event will feature perspectives from survivors, advocates, and violence prevention professionals.Diana Garlington is a Providence-based author, community activist, and speaker whose honors include the 2016 Hometown Hero award, the Nonviolence Institute's Community Impact Award, and the NAACP's Ida B. Wells award. In memory of her daughter, she founded the Esscence T. Christal Female Youth Empowerment Program and now works with Moms Demand Action and Safer Communities For Justice on Providence’s unsolved murders, while serving on the RICAGV and One Gun Gone boards.Prachi Kene, PhD, ABPP is a Professor and Director of the Graduate Counseling Programs at RIC, a licensed psychologist in the states of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and is board certified in Clinical Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Her research and clinical work focus on suicidality and intimate partner violence, areas where she is committed to advancing both scholarship and meaningful, real-world impact.Lisa Pina-Warren is Executive Director of the Nonviolence Institute, with over 15 years in violence intervention, and a Certified Homicide Specialist through the National Advocate Credentialing Program. Drawing on her firsthand experience with the impact of violence, she works to help individuals and families heal while also serving on the City of Providence's Pathway to End Gun Violence Advisory Council and the Providence Police Community Advisory Board.Zoe Weissman is a medical anthropology student at Brown University and in the school’s Program for Liberal Medical Education. Zoe served as Director of March For Our Lives' Parkland Chapter for several years after experiencing the 2018 Parkland shooting. After surviving her second school shooting at Brown University, Zoe became a member of Team ENOUGH's Executive Council. She also conducts gun violence prevention research with faculty from Brown, Columbia, and the Rockefeller Institute.This event is free, open to the public, and sponsored by the Rhode Island College Committee on College Lectures in collaboration with the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence.Attendees will receive a free parking permit by email after registering through Eventbrite.
