- **Event Description**: Celebrate Juneteenth 2026 in Nature!About this EventJoin FOPOS’s Stewardship Team on June 19 for a special Juneteenth Nature Walk as we celebrate freedom, culture, community, and outdoor wellness in the Preserve. This guided walk offers an opportunity to honor the legacy of Juneteenth while connecting with the natural world and reflecting on the importance of access to green spaces, stewardship, and community.Led by our summer stewardship interns, the walk will also recognize National Pollinator Month as we explore the fascinating role of native pollinators in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Along the trails, we’ll discover pollinator hotspots, learn about the wildflowers, shrubs, and trees that depend on them, and observe bees, butterflies, and other pollinating species in action.Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply looking to spend time outdoors with family and friends, this walk is a chance to celebrate freedom, culture, and connection to the land while enjoying the beauty of the Preserve.Meetup Location: Mountain Lakes House. The Mountain Lakes House parking lot is within the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature preserve located at 57 Mountain Ave, Princeton NJ, 08540. Be sure to drive down the long paved driveway entrance to the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, marked by a series of black mail boxes. The gravel parking lot is on your left about a 1/2 mile down the driveway.About FOPOS: Founded in 1969, FOPOS has been working to preserve and protect natural spaces in the greater Princeton area for more than 50 years. As a part of our work, we rely on volunteers to help make progress when it comes to restoration work such as our current forest and riparian restoration projects in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.Can't make this session?                 "description": "Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS), founded in 1969, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to acquiring open space in Princeton for preservation, protecting natural resources, maintaining accessibility to trails, and providing environmental education. Throughout the Princeton region, FOPOS works with groups to support efforts to preserve and protect open space and the environment. In 2019, FOPOS will celebrate it's 50th year.Since its founding, FOPOS has helped to establish over 1,000 acres of parkland and a network of trails that nearly encircles Princeton.  Through grants and the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS has helped to raise over $5 million for the purchase of land and acquisition of easements on properties that might have been bulldozed for development.  In addition to land preservation, FOPOS also leads in stewardship, from creating and maintaining hiking trails, boardwalks and footbridges, to the removal of invasive species and the replanting of native varieties.  FOPOS also sponsors community programs and activities, such as nature walks and educational workshops, and advocates for governmental actions that protect our water, land, animals and plant communities.
