Shelley started creating art out of necessity—seeking a way to get through a long, dark winter and to find an outlet for her creativity. After being given some paints, she began experimenting, enjoying the process even when her early pieces reminded her of kindergarten artwork.
Relying on her stubborn determination, Shelley painted every day. Her passion grew quickly, and painting soon became all she wanted to do. Through teaching herself, making mistakes, and learning something new from each piece, she not only progressed artistically but also found that her anxiety, depression, and stress faded while she worked in her own world of creativity and imagination. Painting became the solution she had been searching for.
Shelley hopes her journey will inspire anyone who believes they “can’t even draw a stick person”—because she once felt the same. As the quote goes, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!”
