# Event Details - **Event Name**: South African Sign Language in digital spaces - **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 29 May, 2026 at 10:00 am – Fri, 29 May, 2026 at 03:00 pm - **Event Description**: Join us for an engaging showcase on advancing South African Sign Language in digital spacesAbout this EventINTRODUCTIONFor South African Sign Language (SASL) to take up its rightful place in digital spaces, key language resources need to be developed and made available in SASL. Researchers at Stellenbosch University were tasked with compiling a language report for SASL and identifying possible stakeholders for future SASL-related initiatives within the Digital Humanities. The report will be disseminated by way of a showcase of key projects, such as the digitisation of SASL curriculum materials, establishment of a sign bank and wordnet for SASL, and setting up an inventory of existing SASL resources.The event is a hybrid showcase on key projects on South African Sign Language (SASL) in digital spaces and discussions on how stakeholders can support its growth. During this workshop, stakeholders will be asked to consider how they can contribute to the digital growth of South Africa's most recent official language.The project is a collaboration between SADiLaR and Stellenbosch University. We are inviting a wide range of stakeholders, including mother tongue users of SASL, DeafSA, DSTI, NID, PanSALB, researchers at different universities, and Wikipedia.AIM OF WORKSHOPThe aim is to report on the results of a study on the presence of SASL in digital spaces (What is available? What is being developed? What should be planned?
