Join us at Linchester Mill at 10 AM - 4 PM on March 28, 2026 for a memorable day of history, heritage, and hands-on learning.
Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds, and stories of the American Civil War at Linchester Mill as the brave men and women of Carpenter’s Battery bring history to life through authentic artillery demonstrations, soldier impressions, and living-history interpretation.
Carpenter’s Battery represents one of the historic artillery units of the War Between the States, portraying the dedicated cannoneers who served the great field guns that shaped the outcome of battles across Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Through hands-on displays and knowledgeable re-enactors, visitors will learn how Civil War artillery operated, how crews lived and worked, and what life was like for the soldiers who served behind the guns.
See and learn about a genuine 1841 Model 6-pounder field cannon, the same type of artillery piece used during the Civil War. This historic weapon will be displayed with its full crew, who will explain:
• How cannons were loaded and fired
• The duties of each crewman
• The ammunition and tools of the artillery
• The role artillery played on the battlefield
Visitors will have the opportunity to speak directly with the re-enactors, examine authentic reproduction equipment, and gain a deeper understanding of 19th-century military life. This event is ideal for families, students, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about America’s past. Whether you are a lifelong Civil War student or seeing living history for the first time, Carpenter’s Battery offers an engaging and educational experience.
