The small mining town of Prescott had big dreams in the mid1800s. As rough and tumble as any Arizona territory, the town fought with Tucson over being appointed the capital, which it briefly was in 1864. While Phoenix prevailed when statehood was achieved, Prescott dug in and continued mining gold and silver and raising heck! Its infamous Whiskey Row, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1900, tells tales full of colorful characters. Hotels like the St. Michael and the Hassayampa Inn are elegant , historic and haunted. The Gurley Street Grill, Palace Saloon and Matt’s Longhorn Saloon serve tasty western fare along with potent spirits of their own. The surprising history behind the Granite Street parking garage will spook you, while the Old Firehouse Plaza recalls the historic great fire of 1900. You’ll visit eclectic Arts Prescott gallery and Tis, Arizona’s first skyscraper. The historic Elks Theatre and the haunted Masonic Temple round out a tour of Arizona’s creepiest town square.
