- **Event Description**: This April, the Marr Sessions will provide you a chance to experience the Do-It-Yourself spirit that made this city's underground scene what it is via a signed copy of Season to Risk's 1995 release In a Perfect World, from the collection of the Marr Sound Archives.

Season to Risk is a Kansas City based hardcore rock n' roll band, formed in 1989, re-formed in 2021, and still active today. Vocalist Steve Tulipana has lived a life dedicated to local music, playing a role in over a dozen bands since his first gig as vocalist of punk band Nine Lives. During the 2001-2021 hiatus taken by Season to Risk, Tulipana focused his energy into creating and running local venues RecordBar (f. 2005) and MiniBar (f. 2011).

This 1995 release is a colorful and concise example of the national and local post-hardcore scene. Featuring Steve Tulipana on vocals, Duane Trower on guitar, Paul Malinowski on bass, and Jason Gerken on drums; this record brings together some incredibly talented and successful musicians. Contained in the grooves of this blue piece of vinyl is your chance to experience the anti-establishment attitude of punk-rock days past and present, made blatant through this band's refusal of the typical chorus-verse-chorus-verse structure, alongside heavy drums, distorted basslines, and shouted vocals.

The Marr Sessions... a new series at The Listyning Room brought to you by C4RM.org and the Marr Sound Archives housed at the UMKC Library.  These events represent a unique synergy between the preservation of music history and the art of modern listening. This program bridges the gap between the Marr Sound Archives at UMKC—one of the nation's premier repositories of recorded sound—and the Center for Recorded Music (C4RM), which is dedicated to the social and technical impact of audio.

While the archives provide the "raw material" of history in the form of rare, physical artifacts, The Listyning Room provides the "lens" through which to experience them, utilizing a world-class, high-fidelity sound system featuing equipment by Audio Note, Klipsch, and Cambridge Audio, that brings these vintage recordings to life with startling clarity.

This collaboration is particularly powerful because it transforms what is often a solitary research activity into a communal, sensory event. By bringing rare recordings out of the climate-controlled vaults and into a purpose-built social space, C4RM and UMKC are making Kansas City’s deep musical heritage accessible and visceral. It allows the public to not just learn about the past, but to hear it exactly as it was meant to be heard, fostering a deeper connection to the artists and engineers who shaped our cultural landscape.

We begin with an introduction by staff from the Marr Sound Archives and then play the full album. Doors open at 6:30pm with music in the air.

Support Center For Recorded Music 501(c)(3) with a $10 donation. Includes admission, snacks, and a complimentary drink—from beer, cocktails or wine to refreshing non-alcoholic choices.
Seating at The Listyning Room is on a first-come first-seated basis.  Donate in advance to secure a spot for these exclusive events. If any spots are left open, donations will be accepted at the door.

The Listyning Room is located inside the nbkc building at 3510 W. 95th Street, Leawood, KS 66206.  This is the north side of Ranch Mart, and there is plenty of parking for everyone next to the building.
