Skupina Zu vznikla v Ostii, západně od Říma roku 1997, a je pověstná širokou syntézou avantgardních žánrů. Zatímco jejich sestava je typická pro jazzovou kapelu, za tvrdý zvuk vděčí punk rocku a jejich tvorba vzdoruje snadné kategorizaci. V této souvislosti je zmiňován noise, math rock, industrial, avantgarda, drone i ambient. Díku svému zaměření našla desítky spřízněných muzikantů v kapelách jako Einsturzende Neubauten, Sonic Youth, Can, The Stooges, The Ex, či sólistů jako Mike Patton, Ken Vandermark nebo Mats Gustafsson, s nimiž během posledních dvou dekád spolupracovala. Posledním pokračováním této mozaiky je italsko-japonská sestava RuinsZu s Tatsuyou Yoshidou, jejíž koncert jsme pořádali v květnu 2024 v rámci přehlídky Other Music. Tentokrát přijíždí Zu v tradiční sestavě coby power trio.

Zu - legend of the Western noise avant-garde

Formed in Ostia, west of Rome, in 1997, Zu is known for its broad synthesis of avant-garde genres. While their line-up is typical of a jazz band, their hard-edged sound owes much to punk rock, and their work defies easy categorization. Noise, math rock, industrial, avant-garde, drone and ambient have all been mentioned in this context. Thanks to its focus, it has found dozens of kindred musicians in bands like Einsturzende Neubauten, Sonic Youth, Can, The Stooges, The Ex, and soloists like Mike Patton, Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson, with whom it has collaborated over the past two decades. The latest addition to this mosaic is the Italian-Japanese line-up RuinsZu with Tatsuya Yoshida, whose concert we hosted in May 2024 as part of the Other Music concert series. This time Zu is coming in the traditional line-up as a power trio.
