After 16 years in power, Orbán is facing a serious challenge and a potential electoral defeat. What kind of regime did Orbán establish in Hungary, and what forces can he mobilise in the run-up to the elections and afterwards? What are his chances of staying in power? Orbán's challenger, Péter Magyar, was a long-time member of the regime establishment; now, he is a radical critic. What kind of alternative does he offer, and what can we expect from him in the event of an electoral victory? What should we be looking out for before the elections, and what scenarios might we see afterwards?

Eszter Kováts is a political scientist working at the University of Vienna. From 2009 to 2019 she was responsible for the East-Central European gender program of the political foundation Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Budapest. She completed a PhD at ELTE University in Budapest. In 2022, her doctoral thesis was published as a book in Hungarian under the title “Gender Madnesses in Hungary and Germany”, winning the Aurél Kolnai Prize for the best political science book of the year from the Hungarian Political Science Association. She also received the Pelikán Prize from the Czech journal Listy, for her merits in political thinking in East-Central Europe.
