Christian is a curator at a prestigious museum of modern art that is preparing a daring conceptual exhibition. Its central idea is a 4 x 4 metre square, a space governed by absolute equality and tolerance. Together with a PR agency, the museum searches for the best strategy to make the project stand out in a distracted and event-saturated media landscape.

But when Christian falls victim to a bizarre pickpocketing incident and loses his wallet and phone, one of his subordinates comes up with a brilliant plan to get them back. As usual, Christian cannot focus on anything but himself. And much like Swedish society at large, the conceptual exhibition begins to dissolve into absurd chaos, reflecting the tension between liberal values, egoism and self-interest. Welcome to The Square, otherwise known as contemporary Europe.

Christian je kurátor prestižního muzea moderního umění, které právě chystá odvážnou konceptuální výstavu. Její ústřední myšlenkou je čtverec o rozměrech 4 x 4 metry. Uvnitř něj platí pravidlo naprosté rovnosti a tolerance. Společně s PR agenturou hledá muzeum ideální strategii, jak v roztržitém a událostmi zavaleném mediálním prostoru celou akci zviditelnit.

Jenže pak Christian při bizarní formě kapesní krádeže přijde o peněženku a mobil a jeden z jeho podřízených vymyslí geniální způsob, jak je získat zpět. Christian se jako obvykle nedokáže soustředit na nic jiného než sám na sebe. A podobně jako celá švédská společnost se i konceptuální výstava začíná utápět v bizarním zmatku, který definuje napětí mezi liberálními hodnotami, egoismem a sobectvím. Vítejte ve čtverci jménem současná Evropa.
