The lecture aims to demystify Lacanian psychoanalysis by examining what Lacan calls the Imaginary Order—the domain of the ego, illusion, theoretical meaning, suffering, and superficiality. Central to the Imaginary is the mirror stage, the formative process through which the ego and the sense of self are established. We will explore how the self is created within the Imaginary Order, how it emerges as a linguistic illusion, how it contributes to psychological suffering, and why this illusion is so persistent and persuasive. Finally, we will turn to Lacan’s reference to the Vedic dictum “Thou art That” as a path to liberation from the Imaginary order.

The lecture is based on Alice’s Adventures in Lacan-Land: Demystifying Lacanian Psychoanalysis; however, prior reading of the book is not required to understand the lecture.
