Sensei Steve Ubl began training in the 1967 in the art of Tang Soo Do. In 1969 he began training in the JKA style of karate. He moved to Japan in 1972 and was recognized by Nakayama sensei of the JKA for his character and talent. Taken under Nakayama sensei’s wing, Steve sensei experienced many hours of private tuition from the JKA Chief Instructors and made copious notes from these periods of intense learning. He received his 1st dan directly from Nakayama sensei while residing at the Hoitsugan. He also received instruction from Nakayama sensei in 1974 and returned to Japan several more times between 1976 and 1977. Returning to the USA, Steve sensei entered the Japan Karate Association Instructor Training programme under Nishiyama sensei at the JKA-US Headquarters in 1973, where, as a full-time trainee, he became an instructor with the AAKF-ITKF. By the late ‘70’s Steve sensei’s ideas began to transcend regular training in any dojo and his development continued more from his own intelligent application of ideas, influenced from the time he spent in Japan. Throughout the ‘80’s and ‘90’s Steve sensei, an intensely private individual, trained mostly alone and free from restriction. In 2004 he was persuaded by a dedicated group of North American karate-ka to share his deep knowledge. For well over a decade, he travelled the world, teaching at international seminars. Although he no longer travels, the HDKI are happy to have Steve Sensei as the guest instructor at this year’s summer camp.
Scott Langley is the founder and chief technical director for the HDKI. He lived in Japan for 5 years and is now resident in Dublin, Ireland. A graduate of the famous instructors’ course in Japan, Scott has been a successful competitor with National, European and World championship titles to his name. He is the author of the best-selling “Karate Stupid” and “Karate Clever” and is in great demand as an instructor throughout the world.
JD Sensei grew up in New Zealand before moving to the US. He is a graduate of the the ISKF instructor program and is a qualified instructor, examiner, and judge. During his time with the ISKF, he contributed to the College program, was a member of the East Coast Technical Committee, and regularly taught throughout the United Sates. He is now a senior member of the HDKI USA, promoting the group throughout the U.S. Finally, he is the author of Karate Science: Dynamic Movement. In his regular life, he is devoted to building sustainable science-based Innovation Ecosystems through his role with the Federal Government.
