About the Play:

Megs and David are Vietnam vets who don’t see much of each other anymore, although they live in the same town. But, on opening day of trout season, Megs shows up to take Davey fishing in honor of their pal Bobby, who died alongside them in war, and to get some closure on the tragic experience they shared. David lives with his sister Martha, a plain, lonely high school teacher who acts as his caregiver. He masks his pain with alcohol and refuses to talk about his war experiences. The gregarious, charming Megs tries to hide his own explosively angry tendencies and can’t stop talking about Vietnam. Their friendship is tested when a romantic relationship develops between Megs and Martha. In a sense all three characters are “wounded warriors,” struggling to get past their pain, loss and guilt and get on with life.

About the Characters:

MEGS:

Age: Portray 30s-50s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Characteristics: Megs is an out-going, volatile Vietnam veteran whose charismatic energy is a desperate cover for his explosively angry tendencies. His determination to help his war buddy David is an attempt at self-redemption as much as an act of friendship.

MARTHA:

Age: Portray late 30s-50s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Heavy, Lead
Characteristics: Martha is a plain, desperately lonely high school science teacher who is a bit straightlaced. She still lives in the home she grew up in because she devotes herself to her brother Davey, who suffers from PTSD, by serving as his maid and caregiver.

DAVID:

Age: Portray 30s-50s
Ethnicity: Any
Line Load: Medium-Heavy, Major Supporting
Characteristics: David is a former high school athletic hero whose life was irrevocably changed by his service in Vietnam. He still blames himself for the death of his pal Bobby. He is silent, brooding, surly and withdrawn from life as he masks his pain with alcohol.
