Theater in the Woods recently received a $9,300 grant from the Arts & Social Cohesion program at the Vermont Community Foundation. The grant will support Theater in the Woods’ mission of fostering community connection by inviting more people into the creative process of writing, reading, and producing plays. The project, titled From Ten Minutes to One-Acts: Community Engagement Through Theater, commences September 13 with an open invitation to write a 10-minute play, either in person at Theater in the Woods’ barn space in Tinmouth, or by Zoom. From this exercise, writers can choose to refine and submit their plays to be considered for the annual Ten Minute Plays event in November at Stone Valley Arts in Poultney, at which eight plays are read over two weekends in a dinner theater setting. Writers are also invited to submit a play without attending the initial writer’s room. “Life seems so fast and full these days, and it’s a challenge to connect in real time and space,” Administrative Director Melissa Chesnut-Tangerman says. “Theater brings people together, and over the years producing Ten Minute Plays at Stone Valley Arts we’ve seen how hungry — and satisfied — audiences are for involvement in the process of creation. “With this Arts & Social Cohesion grant, we will be able to expand the project at all levels: we’ll broaden the call for writers to submit plays; the public can attend the initial read-throughs as well as the November performances; and very excitingly for us, two of the Ten Minute Plays will be chosen, with audience input, to be developed over the winter into one-act plays for a spring production. “Our lead director Meg Bouchard will dive deep with the authors and actors in rehearsal, and bring two original stories to life.” The Vermont Community Foundation was established in 1986 as an enduring source of philanthropic support for Vermont communities.
