You are invited to participate in an ekphrastic writing workshop!

When: Saturday November 8, from 10AM to Noon (possibly longer).

Where: Stone Valley Arts, 145 East Main Street, Poultney, VT 05764

The workshop will be co-facilitated by David Mook and Burnham Holmes. In short, ekphrastic writing is writing in response to works of art. Ekphrasis is from the Greek for description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise. Ekphrastic (adjective) describes a vivid and often dramatic description of a visual work of art. In addition to description, ekphrasis can also be commentary, writing that makes imaginative leaps, creates narrative or dialogue, gives voice to the subject, or even to the artist. We will examine some famous and not-so-famous works of ekphrastic writing – for example, "Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats, and "Archaic Torso of Apollo" by Rainer Maria Rilke, among others. Let’s explore together the endless creative possibilities and potential for transformative experiences when prompted by visual art.                              

After reading and discussing several examples and exploring the many possible approaches to ekphrastic writing, both in poetry and prose, there will be time for writing and sharing. The sculptor Rodin told Rilke, "Go to the Louvre. Choose something and write about it." We are inviting you to come to SVA gallery and choose something to write about.  

This workshop is in anticipation of an upcoming Ekphrastic Art event scheduled to open in June 2026 at Stone Valley Arts. Poets and writers will be invited to respond to submitted works of art. Artists will respond to written pieces submitted by the writers. All selected art and writing will be exhibited in the SVA galleries June-July.
