Anyone needing the skills to raft, canoe, tube or kayak downriver in South Africa can join this exciting 4-day course near Johannesburg. This is for those intending to become river guides, club safety officers, recreational paddlers. Even hikers who want to understand how to "read" rivers before crossing can benefit and learn some boating skills.

The course has been running for over 20 years several times a year at our venue on the Vaal. Offered by Adventure Standards Africa it is a comprehensive practical guide to safety, equipment, group management, river routes, catering, trip organisation and logistics, and guiding qualifications. Anyone may attend and will receive personalised coaching and advice at their level.

Days are spent on river learning to navigate rapids, recognise hazards, set up rescues, react to situations, and gain confidence. Mastering capsizes and recovery are very important! Two nights are spent camping out, with training in catering for river expeditions, camping, packing boats securely and with waterproofing, and caring for the fragile river environment. 

Those who choose to do the Assessment at the end (or some weeks afterwards to allow time for practice) can obtain the Certificate of Personal River Proficiency (Entry Level or Intermediate). This is a requirement along with Wilderness First Aid and a logbook of completed trips in order to enrol for the legal guiding certificate in South Africa.

The course convenor is Prof Graeme Addison, who launched rafting in South Africa and pioneered many of the routes that are run as adventure tours today. He has written several books about rivers - both on techniques and the world's great rafting rivers. The instructors are qualified river guides with years of experience on many different rivers.
