This year's theme is Courage, recognising the extraordinary strength and resilience of people who have been forced to leave their homes and rebuild their lives in new places.At the University of Portsmouth, as part of this event, which has been funded by the University of Portsmouth Research Culture Fund, we are proud to mark Refugee Week 2026 with a special event that invites students and staff to come together, share stories, and reflect on what home and belonging mean to us all.The Library Display - Come and Add Your Voice!From Monday 15th to Friday 19th June, a Voices of Courage display will be installed in the Atrium at the University of Portsmouth Library, and we need you to help bring it to life.The display boards are built around three themes: Home, Belonging, and Postcards for the Future, and they are waiting to be filled with your thoughts, memories, and messages. There is also a beautiful display stand where you are invited to place a meaningful object that connects you to the idea of home or belonging.This is your space. Come and write a note, pin a thought, share a memory, or simply leave a message for future generations. The display grows with every contribution, so the more people who visit and participate, the richer and more powerful it becomes.Drop in any time between 15th and 19th June and leave your mark.What next after Sharing Your Object and thoughtsShare Your Story: On the day of the event, you will find a collection of objects on display. Pick up the one that speaks to you and take one minute to share whatever story or feeling it brings to mind.On Friday 19th June, the display will move from the Library to Portland Building, where we will create a warm and welcoming space for students and staff to come together. The event will be set up in the corner of the Atrium, featuring display boards, seating, and an open, inclusive atmosphere.The EventDate: Friday, 19 June 2026 Time: 11:00 am – 2:30 pm Venue: Portland Building, University of PortsmouthBelow is the programme for the day; you can plan to stick around for the whole event or drop in and out according to your availability and interests.Programme11:00 am - WELCOME. Doors open with the exhibition. Help yourself to tea and coffee, and take your time to explore ideas and objects shared by colleagues and students. The exhibition will also include original artwork created by refugees from Al-Azraq Refugee Camp.12:00 pm - Embroidery Circle: Often misunderstood as an apolitical and passive expression of gender subjugation, embroidery has constituted a powerful tool for mobilising against violence and oppression. We invite you to join us to come together to practice the courage of maybe stepping out of your comfort zone, pushing the seams of a traditionally gendered practice to be together and stand in solidarity with those fleeing conflict, violence and persecution. Materials will be provided.1:00 pm - Light lunch provided1:30 pm - Online Guest Speaker: Tom Green, Senior Producer, Counterpoints Arts (London). He will join us online to share insights on Refugee Week 2026 and this year's theme, "Courage." Drawing on his experience with Counterpoints Arts and Refugee Week, he will explore how the arts, culture, and community can amplify refugee voices and experiences across the UK.2:00pm - Film screening: we will watch together two short films, Infancia Desterrada (16 mins) & Hayat (14 mins), in the lecture theatre (Portland 1.74)2:30 pm - Informal discussion and final Remarks: we will take some time to share what we thought of the films, what we experienced throughout the day, and how we would like to continue to show solidarity with refugees beyond Refugee Week.Book Your PlaceEveryone is welcome, but your registration will help us plan for drinks and food.
