Realizado no mesmo ano de Mónica e o Desejo, Noites de Circo é o oposto tonal desse filme, muito embora o seu núcleo dramático lhe seja coerente: fechado, obscuro e emocionalmente violento, Noites de Circo acompanha uma trupe itinerante de circo onde Harriet Andersson (a Mónica do filme anterior que se passeava pelo verão e pela perigosa abertura campestre), volta a estar no centro do drama, interpretando Anne, uma artista circense, amante do dono do circo, e que protagonizará um perigoso jogo de sedução com um outro ator. Para além do negrume dramático e da intensidade do trabalho dos atores, Noites de Circo marca também a primeira colaboração de Bergman com o diretor de fotografia Sven Nykvist.
