May Day, celebrated on May 1, is important both as a traditional spring festival and as a global day honoring workers' rights and labor movements. It commemorates historic struggles for fair working conditions, including the fight for the eight-hour workday, and remains a symbol of solidarity and social justice worldwide.

This year, MSEA-SEIU Local 1989 will be anchoring a May Day event in Portland. It is particularly important that we gather in solidarity as our Executive Branch union colleagues have been without a contract for 10 months. This rally is also an opportunity for us to raise awareness of our labor disputes, including advocating for a living wage for our adjunct faculty, addressing unsafe facilities and working conditions, and highlighting the ongoing staffing shortages we face as we try to serve the public.
