KMHD’s Fall Member Appreciation Event is happening November 15 at The Get Down! Join us for an unforgettable night of Latin music with Portland’s long-running Latin jazz band Pa’lante and the host of KMHD’s Manteca, DJ Disco Diablo. Arrive early for a special dance lesson from local instructor Julana Torres, then stay to celebrate with all your favorite KMHD hosts and other members of our Jazz Without Boundaries community. Pa’lante:

Pa’lante, founded in 1985 by percussionist Nick Gefroh, has long been one of Portland’s favorite Latin bands, evolving out of Gefroh’s earlier groups “Manteca” and the city’s first salsa band “Montuno.” Known for its tight, professional sound, Pa’lante blends the veteran musicians from its early days with outstanding newer players to deliver an irresistible mix of Latin jazz, salsa, cumbia, merengue, timba, bolero, and cha cha cha—music crafted for dancing yet captivating to all listeners. After two decades of playing countless parties, clubs, weddings, and festivals, the group took a break in 2005, reuniting in 2013 with renewed energy and many original members. Today, Pa’lante continues to embody its name—short for para adelante (“forward,” “onward”)—with dynamic, high-energy performances that reflect both its rich history and enduring passion.

Disco Diablo:

Local Portland DJ Disco Diablo plays all around town and hosts Manteca on KMHD every Wednesday from 7-9pm. Manteca is a sonic exploration where the vibrant rhythms and spirit of Latin America intersect with jazz. Every Wednesday Night the show delves into the rich history, dynamic present, and promising future of Latin jazz while enjoying a captivating fusion of established and emerging artists. Julana Torres:

Julana Torres is a Portland local with an extensive career in dance, music, and theatre. Graduate of Jefferson Dance Program, Julana moved on to train with Eveoke Dance Theater of San Diego, Salsa Con Clave in Puerto Rico, Alvin Ailey, Peridance Capezio, and Broadway Dance Center in New York. She has also choreographed and appeared in shows for Disney, New York, New York Hotel, Nike, Will Vinton Claymations, Oregon Symphony, Oregon Ballet Theater, American Diabetes Association, Dance West, Urban Arts Dance Company and more.
