- **Event Description**: Hands-on workshop to learn kintsugi ceramic repair with special treat and teaAbout this EventKintsugi workshop will be back to Obon Shokudo!Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery), the Japanese art of repairing ceramics, transforms cracks into beautiful elements. Instead of viewing them as weaknesses, kintsugi highlights the fractures with gold, embracing the imperfections of our lives. In the workshop, you will learn how to repair damaged ceramics and finish the repaired lines with gold. While the traditional method is more tricky and needs careful handling of the materials, the “modern” Kintsugi method uses easy-to-find materials and is perfect for beginners. The repaired items are intended display only. The workshop is at Obon Shokudo, a cozy, all-vegan Japanese restaurant. If you’re not vegan, give it a try! After the workshop, you’ll get to enjoy special handmade treats with tea to celebrate your kintsugi pieces!Workshop instructions- All materials are provided, including a small broken ceramic bowl.- Feel free to bring your own damaged ceramic pieces from home. They should be ceramic, pottery, or porcelain, no glass or wood.- If you have family heirlooms or items that are broken into many pieces, they might be a bit tricky to fix for the first time. Instead, bring something simple and small.- The repaired items will be displayed because the repair materials aren’t safe for food contact.- Beginners and any skill level are welcome! Ages over 15 is recommended.- Bring a cardboard box or something similar to carry your items home without touching the repaired parts.- We’ll be using epoxy and Gamsol, which is a safer solvent, during the workshop.- If you have any food restrictions, please let us know when you sign up.Instructor infoEmi Joyce is a kintsugi instructor and restorer. She’s been repairing hundreds of broken ceramics and teaching kintsugi regularly. She was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and lives in Portland, Oregon since 2010. Her background includes working as a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer. Her love for craftsmanship and fine motor skills led her to repair ceramics in the Japanese kintsugi method. Instead of making new things, she enjoys mending damaged, but precious objects to give them a new life.Cancelation policyPlease get in touch with modernkintsugirepairpdx@gmail.com as soon as you won’t be able to attend.
