Be careful what you wish for…
James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim explore the darker side of “Happily ever after” in the timeless and ever-relevant Into the Woods. Beloved storybook characters collide as this tangled tale weaves together the stories of a childless Baker and his wife, Cinderella’s quest for love and Jack’s journey to giant-slaying fame. With its rich blend of humor, heartache, and unforgettable melodies, Into the Woods reveals that even the most familiar stories hold unexpected twists and profound lessons.
Director’s note:
“This piece is timeless, resonant, and deeply accessible. I am particularly interested in
revisiting Into the Woods through the lens of my current artistry. By leaning into the
themes of generational cycles, responsibility, and community, this production will
highlight how the stories we tell and the choices we make continue to echo across time.
In this current cultural moment, marked by uncertainty and division, Into the Woods
offers a timely reminder of the strength found in interdependence, the necessity of
accountability, and the hope of building something lasting together. Adding this piece
to your season would invite audiences of all ages into dialogue about the costs of desire,
the resilience of community, and the beauty of collective care.”
