Dr. Marina Bengoa Roldán is a classical concert pianist from Spain. She has extensive performance experience in the United States, Spain, and other European countries in solo piano concerts with orchestra and chamber music. She is Assistant Professor of Music (Piano) at ENMU. 

In commemoration of Manuel de Falla's 150th birthday in 2026, Dr, Bengoa-Roldán will explore his work as a composer, particularly focusing on the use of Spanish idioms in one of his most renowned compositions for piano: the Fantasía Bética. In this piece, de Falla delves into the imitation of el cante jondo (deep singing) and incorporates percussive flamenco elements, such as the sounds of castanets and taconeo (foot stomping).
 
From a young age, Manuel de Falla was immersed in flamenco culture in southern Spain. When he settled in Granada as an adult, he became a prominent advocate for the purism of flamenco, which was largely unappreciated by much of Spanish society at the time. He even established a cante jondo competition to preserve the art form, gaining support from some of the most prominent Spanish artists of that era.
 
This lecture recital will examine de Falla's influences, thoughts, and perspectives on the guitar, flamenco, and deep singing and how he incorporated them into the piano. It will also explore how the combination of these ideas contributed to the creation of one of the most iconic pieces in the repertoire of Spanish piano music. Additionally, the presentation will provide context and insights from his manuscripts regarding the creation of this piece, which was commissioned by the celebrated pianist Arthur Rubinstein.
