- **Event Name**: Cynthia Irwin-Williams Anthropology Lectureship
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 16 Apr, 2026 at 07:00 pm (-06:00)
- **Event Description**: Mission Espíritu Santo in southeastern Texas was originally erected in 1721/1722 in response to the threat posed by LaSalle’s failed 1685 colony, but was relocated four years later. While researchers previously located LaSalle’s colony, his ship La Belle, and the first site of the accompanying Presidio La Bahía, the original Mission Espíritu Santo remained elusive until its discovery in December 2025. Dr. Walter’s presentation explores the findings at this newly identified site and discusses the historical and archaeological significance of the Garcitas Creek complex and its implications for the history of Texas and the Spanish frontier.

The presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 in room 110 of the ENMU Art and Anthropology Building in Portales. It is free and open to the public. For more information, email portales.anthropology@enmu.edu or call 575.562.2206.
