At a shape-note singing, people get together to sing in four-part harmony, unaccompanied, from tunebooks printed in special notation (“shape notes”) designed to make it easier to read music. It’s more like a jam session than a performance – we’re singing for our own enjoyment, rather than for an audience. You’re welcome to listen, but you’re also welcome to pick up a loaner book and sing along. We’ll sing from 10 am to 3:30 pm, with dinner on the grounds at 1 pm. Other events of the weekend: There will be social gatherings near the town of Herbster (about 12 miles to the northeast) on Saturday night and Sunday morning. At this singing, we will try to respect all of our fellow singers equally, resisting bias based on race, ethnicity, religion, income, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, ability, geography, points of view, and other forms of identity; including who has been singing longer than whom. We’ll try to share the stresses of being in a diverse community more equally, instead of having those stresses fall mostly on people from marginalized groups. All singers are encouraged speak out, if you see something that doesn’t live up to our stated values. You can also talk to the event organizer (Stacey) about any problems that need to be addressed. Singers are encouraged to accept feedback with an open mind, and with gratitude for a chance to learn and do better in the future.
