Workshop 1: Connection Skills Through Tango

The essence of Argentine Tango is in the connection: the connection with your partner, the connection with the music, and ultimately, the connection with yourself. In the social salon, the focus isn't performance or perfection — its presence. Tango is highly improvisational, centered on comfort, genuine exchange, and the shared development of movement. Jennifer will encourage you to make things happen through shared purpose rather than by relying on tension or forced form. This workshop will have you generating movement by letting the music and connection guide your technique, and not the other way around. Learn how to invite strong, grounded connection and frame within yourself and then how to share that intention with your partner through a series of fun movement exercises. Beginners welcome. No tango experience required, though some dance experience in any style might be helpful.

Workshop 2: The Structure of the Tango Embrace

Complementing the first workshop, this session takes the connection deeper by focusing on the tango embrace and the tango walk — brought into the fuller presence you developed in Workshop 1. By the end of this techniques class we will be creating tango phrases by integrating the basic building blocks of tango movement into more complex patterns. You will see how the heart of tango lies in being able to meet a partner where they are, listen to the music, and co-create something unique in the moment. Tango is perfectly suited to the improvisation used in fusion dancing, and you will discover many crossover techniques between the two styles. Suitable for those who have taken Workshop 1, or those with prior tango experience.

Full Day Schedule

12:45 PM: Doors open; day-of registration until capacity (45) 1:00 PM: Workshop One 
2:30 PM: Break (bring your own lunch, practice, relax, ask questions) 
3:00 PM: Workshop Two 
4:30 PM: Workshops end 
4:45 PM: Grange closes for dinner 
6:45 PM: Grange reopens 
7:00 PM: Evening fusion and tango dance with DJ Jennifer and others
10:00 PM: Dance ends
10:15PM: Doors close

Workshop and Evening Dance Things to Know

Location: The Grange is located in a residential neighborhood. Please park on-site or on the street, being watchful of blocking driveways. Please avoid loud talk outside after the dance.

Food: Water will be available, but consider bringing snacks for the break. Jennifer Jaymes will be available during the break to answer questions. There will be low volume music for those who wish to practice tango or fusion. Light snacks will be available during the evening dance.

Footwear: Please wear dance shoes or other clean, non-scuffing indoor footwear. Socks and bare feet are not recommended and are at your own discretion and risk

Roots Fusion offers a supportive and consensual fusion and micro-fusion dance space in which to explore the co-creation of movement to contemporary music, have fun, and meet new people. Lead and follow is gender-free, and switching leads is welcome. Please help keep this dance alcohol and substance-free.  

Dance styles: Roots Fusion can combine elements of blues, tango, west coast swing, waltz, zouk, lindy, hip-hop, bachata and other partnered dance styles that utilize frame and the concepts of lead and follow. New to fusion? No problem — ask any organizer for a dance!  

Consent: Fusion and tango can range from open hand hold to very close embrace. Please be mindful of obtaining consent, either verbally or with clear physical communication, before close embrace especially with a new partner. Please do not hesitate to bring any unwelcome or potentially hazardous behavior to the attention of our volunteer staff. If you introduce elements of contact improv, be aware of dance floor etiquette and of moving with the flow of the space. Low dance lifts require clear verbal consent between dancers prior to their attempt. We do not permit high lifts, acrobatics, or fast-moving non-partnered dance styles such as breakdance.   

Refunds: A full refund will be given up to and including April 30th for cancellation requests made in writing (see contact info below). Between May 1st and May 5th, a 70% refund will be given. After May 5th, no refunds will be made. If you feel ill or are experiencing covid or flu-like symptoms the day before or the day of the workshops, please do not attend. Let us know in writing ASAP. If we can fill your spot from our waitlist we will offer you a 100% refund. If we cannot fill your space we will offer you a 70% refund. Those who paid the financial hardship rate will be given a 100% refund for illness.

Roots Fusion Dance is an all-volunteer non-profit registered in the state of Washington. 10% of our net from this dance will go to a local non-partisan charity.
