Port Orford is incredibly unique because it’s one of the few south facing ports on the Oregon coast, and it operates directly in the open ocean - without a protective harbor or breakwater. ? Huge cranes lift each fishing vessels in and out of the Pacific ocean on a daily basis.

During our tour, fishermen and port operators will explain how the geography of the area shapes fishing practices, safety, and daily operations. Participants will see the port’s historic dolly dock system, where boats are lifted in and out of the water by crane and parked above the shoreline (whether it will be in action is weather and tide dependent). ? This system supports a fleet of small, owner-operated commercial boats that fish close to shore using hook and line methods. The Port Orford fleet produces incredibly high quality seafood through careful resource stewardship. Bring your cooler and some ice because there may be opportunities to buy fresh fish!

The tour includes a stop and lunch at Port Orford Sustainable Seafood, a South coast favorite that specializes in boat-to-table seafood and ultimate transparency in seafood distribution. They also make a killer miso blackcod bowl! You’ll also hear from the Oregon Kelp Alliance about ongoing kelp restoration efforts and their role in supporting healthy nearshore ecosystems. ?

This tour is ideal for anyone interested in working waterfronts, sustainable fisheries, and coastal communities. Stick around after the tour for Port Orford SeaFest, a free community event at Mr. Ed’s Mr. Ed’s Underground Pub from 2-6pm.
