Join us for an unforgettable evening as we host award-winning author Celeste Mohammed, author of Pleasantview and Ever Since We Small, for a special Sip & Read event featuring her latest work, Ever Since We Small.
Celeste Mohammed, a Trinidadian lawyer-turned-writer, has earned critical acclaim for her compelling storytelling and richly drawn characters. Her debut, Pleasantview, won the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature (as well as the 2022 CLMP Firecracker Award).
Her newest novel-in-stories, Ever Since We Small, released in the Caribbean in May 2025, weaves an intergenerational saga across time, place, and identity.
About Ever Since We Small
This beautifully crafted novel-in-stories traces the bloodline of Jayanti (who becomes an indentured girmitiya) through her descendants in Trinidad, exploring how memory, trauma, love, and legacy are passed across generations.
The narrative spans from India under the British Raj to multicultural modern Trinidad, blending myth, history, and everyday life. It touches on themes of belonging, resilience, identity, migration, and the quiet defiance of womanhood.
Mohammed’s prose moves fluidly between Standard English and Trinidadian Creole, giving voice to characters whose lives are shaped by circumstance, secrets, and hope.
At the heart of the book lies the alchemy of turning inherited pain into possibility—of crafting a “generation of gold” from fracture and memory.
