- **Event Name**: Rainwater Catchment & Conservation Workshop
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 11 Jul, 2026 at 09:00 am – Sat, 11 Jul, 2026 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Before the rain we got this spring, South Texas was experiencing a severe drought. The NOAA drought information statement for March had read level 2 drought for Kennedy, Willacy, & Cameron, level 3 for Zapata & Hidalgo, and level 4 (super severe) for Brooks & Jim Hogg. We needed the rain so bad & we got it.

We continue to have strains on our water resources and with new infrastructure moving in to the Valley, our limited water will continue to be pulled on and overextended.

With these growing demands, The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is putting on a free rainwater catchment workshop. Imagine if the rain we received this month could have been honored as a sacred resource, one we had been without for a very long time.

We invite you to join us as we learn about Rainfall patterns in South Texas from meteorologists in the National Weather Service, how to create a water catchment system for your home, how to landscape for a hot & dry future with Prickly Pair RGV and about the water conservation efforts already occurring in the RGV.

Almost 50% of residential water use in America goes towards watering turf grass lawns which have little to no ecological value. Honoring the land we live on by planting plants who have been here for thousands of years honors the animals & living beings around us, including ourselves, honors everything in the ecosystem connected to that plant. Honoring rain and water as a sacred & scarce resource is how we must navigate the future. Please join us to learn how.
