the Sacred and the Profane
An ArtEC Members Exhibition

This year’s exhibition explores the enduring tension and blurred boundaries between the sacred and the profane. In a world where divinity brushes against the earthly and ritual intertwines with desire, the works on view navigate these nuanced and overlapping realms with boldness and sensitivity.

Featuring a wide range of practices, including painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, ceramics, and interdisciplinary approaches, the exhibition brings together artists who critically engage with this theme.

The Eastern Province Society of Arts and Craft (EPSAC), fondly known as ArtEC, is one of South Africa’s longest-standing community-based art organisations, rooted in (Gqeberha) Port Elizabeth. Established in the early 20th century, EPSAC was formed to promote and support the visual arts in the Eastern Cape, creating a platform for both emerging and established artists to exhibit their work. Over the decades, the organization has played an important role in fostering a local arts community through regular exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.

EPSAC/Artec is particularly known for its inclusive ethos, welcoming artists of diverse backgrounds and skill levels, and for maintaining a strong connection to the regional cultural landscape. Today, it continues to contribute to the vitality of the Nelson Mandela Bay arts scene by providing opportunities for dialogue, visibility, and creative exchange..
